Soar to Success
Soar to Success is a research-based reading intervention program offered by the Houghton Mifflin Company for students in grades 3-8 who are reading significantly below grade level. Fast-paced lessons are conducted daily in 30 minute small group sessions and incorporate authentic, high-interest literature. Specific strategies of predicting, questioning, summarizing, and clarifying are taught and practiced regularly to enhance comprehension and word attack skills.
Soar to Success sessions are conducted in small group settings where students are given frequent opportunities to apply these strategies during a highly-effective reading model called reciprocal teaching. In reciprocal teaching, students are guided to construct meaning from text by leading strategy discussions and by modeling the reading strategies for the other members of the group. Group conferences are conducted regularly where students are required to share summaries or retellings from their independent readings.
